Desktop as a Service

Desktop as a Service (DaaS)

DaaS, also known as VDI, replaces physical desktop computers with virtual machines (VMs) that exist on servers in CSU’s datacentre but can be accessed securely from any internet connection on a wide range of devices; desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile.

DaaS offers several benefits over traditional desktop computing:

  • Data is more secure and backed up regularly, keeping information safe and accessible
  • Access a McMaster desktop through a client on multiple devices and platforms including Apple OSX, iOS, Linux, and Android OS
  • Thin and zero client devices consume much less energy than traditional PCs
  • Continued safe operation of critical Windows XP units
  • Offsite connectivity to university resources such as Mosaic and MacVIP without VPN
  • Users can pick up right where they left off or even continue working at another workstation in the event of a client hardware failure
  • Swing offices and flexible workspaces are easier to setup, maintain, and reconfigure
  • Virtual machines can be configured to block certain websites and prevent unauthorized installation of applications
  • Software is patched automatically without the need for user intervention
  • New software can be deployed quickly and with minimal interruption to end users
